SO the only way 2 get the mystery item is either through Mad KIng at the end of the event or a random mob drop??? (Kinda like the WOW Holiday hat)

As far as the mystery item...if it's anything like the choco-bunnies and clovers etc, I found a good drop ratio farming for dead swords. I'll do a run once 3pm est rolls around and post my findings.

if none of the npc's are there yet, how do you know that they will trade in those items? or are you just basing it off last year?

He's basing it off last year's event. I wouldn't be surpised if a lot of things are similar to the previous year because of Anet's focus on GW2 but it'll be new to me anyway since I've never had the chance to explore the holiday events. RL said he/she will update the guide as new information comes out. So I'd wait until next day to see if anything new occurs.
